“And realized that was all she had ever really wanted.”
— Mistborn, Book One
Mistborn: The Final Empire is the first book in Brandon Sanderson’s trilogy, and honestly, I’m still at a loss for words after book one.
This was actually my third attempt at starting this novel. I’m still not sure what truly clicked this time around. Perhaps I was finally in the right mood to fully dive into this unique universe, or maybe reading other fantasy books prepared me for its depth. Whatever the reason, I’m incredibly glad I stayed stubborn and gave Mistborn one last chance, because the experience was simply wow.
Summary
In Mistborn: The Final Empire, readers are thrust into a bleak, ash-ridden world dominated by the Lord Ruler, an immortal emperor who has reigned for a millennium. The story introduces Vin, a young Skaa (the oppressed servant class) with an extraordinary talent for Allomancy. This unique magic system allows individuals to “burn” various metals for distinct powers, and Vin discovers she possesses powerful abilities.
She is soon recruited by Kelsier, a charismatic and legendary Mistborn (someone capable of using all Allomantic powers) who leads a daring band of rebels. Their goal is to orchestrate the downfall of the seemingly invincible Lord Ruler and dismantle his oppressive Final Empire.
What I Liked
To be frank, the first 100 pages were a bit of a struggle for me. It took effort to get fully immersed in the story, grasp the intricate world-building, understand the core characters, and identify who we were truly meant to follow. But once I pushed past that initial hurdle, the book completely hooked me. Brandon Sanderson masterfully crafts a narrative filled with genuine surprises, twisting expectations at every turn.
This novel isn’t just about plot; it delivers a powerful emotional punch. It actually made me laugh out loud at times, and at one point, it even brought me to tears. I truly didn’t anticipate that kind of emotional impact, but it resonated deeply, making the story feel incredibly real and alive.
What Didn’t Work for Me
As I mentioned, the initial 100 pages felt challenging. Getting fully oriented within the complex world and with the large cast of characters required a real push.
Regarding Sanderson’s writing style, there were a few moments where I struggled with the overall flow of certain chapters and paragraphs. However, I also believe this can be a natural part of the process for both the reader and an author constructing a story as vast and layered as Mistborn.
My Rating
★★★★☆
Mistborn: The Final Empire earns a strong 4 out of 5 stars from me.

It’s especially rewarding for readers who are willing to invest a bit of time at the beginning for a truly powerful and memorable payoff. If you enjoy stories about underdogs taking on oppressive empires and don’t mind a slightly slower initial pace, Mistborn is definitely for you. It also serves as a fantastic entry point if you’re looking to explore Brandon Sanderson’s wider literary works.
Final Thoughts
Despite the initially slow beginning and those few flow issues, the incredible emotional payoff, immersive world-building, and masterful storytelling made Mistborn: The Final Empire a truly powerful and memorable experience—and a fantastic start to the trilogy. I believe this was an excellent introduction to Brandon Sanderson’s unique writing style, and I’m eager to see how his writing evolves as I delve deeper into his work.
